Air Berlin, the airline which offers flights to the German capital from London Heathrow Airport, has announced that it will become an affiliate member of the oneworld network.
The alliance, which already boasts memberships from American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Iberia, alongside others, will now boast Europe's fifth largest air operator among its ranks.
Air Berlin will begin operating as a part of oneworld from 2012, which will coincide with the launch of the planned Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, a major new hub of air travel in Europe.
Joachim Hunold, chief executive of Air Berlin, said: "Joining a global alliance is the logical next step in Air Berlin's development. We are very pleased and proud to be lining up to join what is clearly the world's top quality airline grouping."
British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia recently received approval from the European Commission to jointly operate transatlantic flights and are now awaiting a final decision from the US Department of Transportation.
