Planning your trip to London

With your train from the airport and your accommodation in the bag, it’s time to start planning your visit to London. The following tips should help.

Choose the best time of year to visit for you

Any time of year is a great time to enjoy London, so the time you choose should depend on what you want to do.

  • June and July are warm and sunny summer months, when bars and restaurants spill out onto the streets and the city’s residents descend on its parks. You’ll also find plenty of festivals and outdoor events across the city in summer. It’s a super fun time to visit London.

  • Autumn is ideal to stroll along the South Bank, walk hand in hand through the city’s many green spaces and enjoy seasonal produce at the likes of Borough Market.

  • Winter means wrapping up warm and enjoying the city’s many Christmas markets, plus a little Christmas shopping.

  • Spring offers the London Marathon, cruises on the Thames, flowers blooming in spots like Kensington Gardens and the chance for al fresco dining once again.

Know when to visit attractions

If you can visit the city’s top attractions during the week and in the middle of the day, you have the best chance of avoiding the crowds. You may even get a cheap deal too.

London Underground

Understand the best way to get around

Navigating London can feel daunting at first, but it’s relatively straightforward if you know how. Your transport options include a combination of:

  • London Underground: Jump on and off the tube at your leisure and travel underneath the city from stop to stop. Buy an Oyster Card and you’ll keep costs down.

  • London Buses: London has an incredible bus network, with routes and connections right across the city. Again, if you buy an Oyster Card, you can simply tap on and off, without spending too much.

  • Overground Trains: For attractions that are a little out of town, the overground train network is ideal.

  • Ferries: You can take a ferry down the Thames – or a water taxi – for a fun way to travel and to take in some of the sights as you go.

Don’t forget to walk as well. It may feel easy to hop on the tube or jump on the bus, but many of the sights are fairly close together. You can walk between plenty of attractions, and you’ll also get a feel for the city. Plus, you never know what interesting diversions you might find.

Natural History Museum

Plan your perfect itinerary

London is packed with attractions and fun things to do, but it can be hard to decide exactly which to see. It helps to consider exactly what you want to get from your time in the city, so you can plan your ideal itinerary. Options include:

  • Romantic: A romantic trip in London could feature the Sky Garden, the London Eye, afternoon tea at the Ritz and ice-skating at Somerset House in winter.

  • Family-friendly: Take the kids on a whirlwind tour of London with a trip on the London Eye, a visit to the Natural History Museum, a few hours at Madame Tussauds, and a shopping experience at Hamleys.

  • Cultural: For the culture vultures amongst you, London really is your oyster. Attractions to add to your cultural agenda include the British Museum, the Tate Modern, Westminster Abbey and the V&A Museum. You could top things off with a West End show too.
