When should you arrive at Heathrow for an international flight?

When flying on an international flight from Heathrow Airport you should arrive at the airport between two and three hours before your flight. This gives you plenty of time to check in, drop your bags and head through security.

Remember, flights tend to start boarding between 30 and 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time. There’s usually an hour cut-off before the flight to check your hold luggage in too. It’s always best to be a little cautious when it comes to arriving at the airport before a flight.

The Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get to Heathrow Airport from central London. Our trains leave London Paddington every 15 minutes and take just 15 minutes to arrive into Heathrow Central station and another six minutes to Terminal 5 station.

You’ll enjoy smooth and seamless travel to the airport, with free Wi-Fi, plenty of space for your luggage and ample leg room whether you travel on Standard Class or Business First Class. Children aged 15 and under also travel for free on Heathrow Express.

Terminal-Specific Arrivals Information

When landing at Heathrow, it’s helpful to know where arrivals is in each terminal so you can plan your onward journey.


  1. Terminal 2 and 3: Arrivals in each terminal exit into the main concourse, where you’ll find cafes and seating areas. Both terminals are a short walk from Heathrow Central station. It should take you between five and 10 minutes to walk to Heathrow Central via the inter-terminal walkway.

  2. Terminal 4: The arrivals hall is on the ground floor. The Elizabeth Line station is directly under the arrivals hall. Here you can take a free train to Heathrow Central and change to the Heathrow Express.

  1. Terminal 5: Domestic and international arrivals have designated exit points on the ground floor. This is a short walk to Terminal 5 station to catch the Heathrow Express.

What to Do if Your Flight is Delayed

If you’re flying from Heathrow and your flight is delayed, there are plenty of things to occupy your time.


  • Shopping: Each terminal is packed with a range of shops and duty free options. If you’re flying from Terminal 5, check out luxury boutiques like Chanel and Louis Vuitton or department stores like Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Terminal 3 has a 2,500m² "New Generation" World Duty Free store, offering over 17,000 products.

  • Eating & Drinking: Heathrow’s terminals offer plenty of options for dining and drinking, whether you want a quick bite, a longer meal or just a drink. This includes the Gordon Ramsay Plane Food Market and itsu in Terminal 5, the Vinery in Terminal 2 and Wild Olive in Terminal 4.

  • Children’s Play Areas: Each terminal at Heathrow includes at least one play area, with slides, soft play and separate baby and junior zones. They’re suitable for children aged 0-9, and you can easily find them using the dedicated Heathrow terminal maps.

Remember, if your flight is delayed over two hours (short-haul) or three hours (long-haul), your airline must provide free meals and refreshments.

Meeting Passengers at Heathrow

If you’re meeting family or friends at the airport, always check the live flight status on this page before travelling to Heathrow. Once you know their flight is on time or the estimated time of arrival, you can plan your journey.

You’ll then need to plan where to meet. You can decide on your own individual meeting point, whether near a shop or a specific coffee shop, or use the designated Heathrow meeting points. They are:


  • Terminal 2: Directly opposite international arrivals, near Caffé Nero.

  • Terminal 3: In the ground floor seating area at arrivals, close to M&S Food.

  • Terminal 4: On the ground floor. There is a seating area just near WHSmith.

  • Terminal 5: There are two meeting points on the ground floor. The north meeting point is opposite Travelex, and the south meeting point is near Costa Coffee.

When heading to Heathrow to meet someone, Heathrow Express is the quickest way to get there from Central London. Trains take just 15 minutes from Paddington.
