Heathrow Express takes on ‘Queen of Speed’ Victoria Pendleton in Speed Challenge

  • 27 Jul 2016

Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton goes head to head with Heathrow Express Driver Caroline, in a race like no other.

Heathrow Express, one of the world’s fastest air-rail links is today celebrating its 18th milestone by challenging Victoria Pendleton, one of the world’s fastest Olympians, to a one on one speed race.

As a former British Olympian track cyclist and successful amateur jockey, Pendleton is renowned for her competitive spirit that has proven she is the ‘Queen of Speed’ both on the track and the turf. Today she takes on the asphalt as she attempts to beat the Heathrow Express from London Paddington to Terminal 3 on board a 600CC limo-bike, currently considered to be one of the fastest ways to get around London.

Pendleton set the nation on fire on a bike at three Olympic Games as well as wowing us all by taking on professional jockeys in the 2016 Fox Hunter Race at Cheltenham, coming a highly respectable 5th, later claiming that this was the probably the greatest achievement of her life.

Having never ridden a motor bike before, Pendleton will travel pillion in today’s sprint to Heathrow, but has promised to leave the riding whip at home despite her determination to beat the train, which at 18 is still the fastest way of getting from Central London to Heathrow.

Gold medallist Victoria Pendleton says: “This is such a fantastic challenge and what a way to celebrate a coming of age – 18 years young today, I could not resist! Heathrow Express sets the pace when it comes to travelling in and out of London. I am a little nervous but excited and while my main focus for the past two years has been on horse-racing, I am always up for a challenge with a difference!”

With up to 150 services a day, the 15-minute Heathrow Express service is the preferred fast commute for many of the global travellers, travelling to and from Heathrow and now carries an average of 17,000 passengers a day (and 91 million people to date) to and from the busy capital.

Victoria adds: “The population is expanding and more people need to get from A to B as quickly as they can. Heathrow Express ticks all the boxes for those of us arriving or heading back into town – it’s fast, frequent and reliable.”

This summer, to celebrate turning 18, Heathrow Express has launched a special reduced fare for customers across the world, travelling to and from Heathrow Airport. The promotion commences on 28th July with return fares reduced from £36 to £25 until the end of August.
