Beautiful Autumn Walks in London’s Royal Parks

London is one of the greenest cities in the world, with around 20% of the city made up of green public spaces. And fall is the ideal time to stretch your legs and see the green turn to beautiful autumn reds, yellows and golds.

Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens

Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens

If you’re in London in September, the parks will likely still be green and you’ll hopefully enjoy temperatures of up to 18-20°C. Shoulder season in London’s royal parks is always beautiful. Come in October and you’ll be treated to a sea of gold and copper, with the fall foliage in all its glory.

The tree-lined avenues are perfect for crisp morning walks on a clear autumn day. The 1.5-mile walk from the Serpentine Gallery to Kensington Palace is a particular highlight. Along the way, you’ll pass the Italian Gardens and Round Pond before arriving at the Palace. It should take you around 20 minutes, and is a great way to warm up on a cold autumn day.

The closest tube to the Serpentine North Gallery is Lancaster Gate (Central line), while the closest to the Serpentine South is Knightsbridge (Piccadilly line). To get to either, take the Bakerloo line at Paddington. Change to the Central Line at Oxford Circus to head to the North Gallery or the Piccadilly Line at Piccadilly Circus for the South Gallery.

Richmond Park and the Deer Rut

Richmond Park and the Deer Rut

Richmond Park is the largest of London’s Royal Parks, sitting north of Kingston Upon Thames. Autumn is deer rutting season in Richmond Park. This spectacular natural event sees male deer clash antlers to compete for mates. While it makes an incredible natural spectacle and photo opportunity, it’s important to keep a safe distance for your own safety and to protect the deer themselves. Bring binoculars to see up close.

The nearest station is Richmond, on the District line or Overground. From Paddington take the District line via Earl's Court. It takes approximately 40 minutes.

Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath offers more of a wild experience than the central parks in the middle of the city. This massive, ancient public park is located in North West London and spans roughly 320 hectares (790 acres).

It offers some stunning woodland walks with vibrant fall colours. The view from Parliament Hill over the London skyline is particularly beautiful on a clear autumn day.

The nearest station for Parliament Hill is Hampstead on the Northern line. From Paddington, take the Hammersmith & City line to King’s Cross. Then head northbound on the Northern line to Hampstead station.

Traditional British Autumn Celebrations

If you want a true taste of Britain on your fall adventure in London, there’s both bonfire night and Diwali to enjoy.

Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night)

Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night)

Date: 5 November 2026

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a plan to blow up Parliament, King James I and his queen and son. Guy Fawkes was the explosives expert responsible for lighting the gunpowder. He was thwarted in the act and the plot never came to pass.

Today, Guy Fawkes night is celebrated to commemorate the failure. London celebrates the tradition, like the rest of the country, with fireworks displays and bonfires. Major events take place at Alexandra Palace, Battersea Park, Victoria Park, and Blackheath, promising extravagant fireworks and big bonfires.

If you’re planning on being in London on 5th November and want to celebrate at one of the top fireworks displays, book your tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Diwali on the Square

Date: October 2026

Diwali is the Festival of Light, celebrated over five days by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains, with plenty of celebrations held right across London.

Trafalgar Square hosts one of the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India. This free family-friendly event features traditional dance, music, food, and spectacular lighting.

The Holly Bush, Hampstead

Where to Stay for an Autumn City Break

Cosy, comfortable and convenient to explore London during fall. That’s what you’ll need in a hotel. These are two of our favourites, ideal for an autumn city break.

Address: 16-22 Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3NN

This luxurious hotel is a short walk to Covent Garden and the West End, and right by the British Museum if you fancy a little history on your fall adventure in the city. It boats the famous Dalloway Terrace, often featuring spectacular seasonal autumn decorations.
