Stand in the clouds at Sky Garden London

This elevated viewpoint sits in London’s so-called ‘walkie-talkie’ building and it really is one of the best spots for soaking up panoramic views of the entire city. You’ll find it around the corner from the Gherkin (another major London landmark) and it’s known for its split levels and leafy, tropical interiors that really do make it feel like you’re wandering around a garden in the sky.

Perhaps the best thing about the Sky Garden in London is the fact that it’s completely free to visit. All you need to do is pre-book your time slot in advance. Slots are released on Monday mornings on the Sky Garden website and they allow you an hour to explore the garden.

Sunset is the most beautiful time to visit (especially on a clear day). If you don’t get the slot you want though, try making a reservation at the Sky Garden’s Darwin Brasserie which automatically gives you access (plus the chance to dine with a stunning view).

Big Ben

Listen to the iconic chimes of Big Ben

Perhaps one of the most quintessential London sights is Big Ben: the clock and bell of Westminster’s Great Tower. It’s been a major sight (and sound!) on the city’s skyline since the 1840s – and you can still hear its iconic chimes on the hour and every quarter hour today.

As well as listening to it from afar, you can get up close and personal with this world-famous clock during a Big Ben tour. This takes about 90 minutes and involves ascending 334 steps right into the bell tower itself, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Tickets cost £35 for adults and £20 for children aged 11 to 17.

A glimpse of royal history at the Tower of London

If it’s London’s thrilling royal history that you’re keen to dive into, there’s no better place than the Tower of London. This majestic collection of stone towers and buildings on the River Thames has witnessed some of the city’s greatest tales and tragedies over the centuries – from the mysterious disappearance of the Princes in the Tower to the execution of Anne Boleyn.

The UNESCO World Heritage Tower of London was actually built by William the Conqueror as a defensive fortress and you’ll be able to explore several of its structures – including the White Tower, Beauchamp Tower, the Royal Mint and the Battlements. A must-see for history buffs, tickets cost £35.80 for adults and £19.80 for kids aged 5 to 15. It’s best to book in advance as it is easily one of the most popular London attractions.
