The Exeter to London Heathrow Airport route

It’s simple and straightforward to take the train from Exeter to Heathrow Airport, with three stages to your trip.


First, you’ll need to jump on the train from Exeter to central London – arriving into either London Paddington or Waterloo. You’ll then need to make your way to Paddington station to take the Heathrow Express to the airport.


Here we’ll run through each leg of the journey in detail.

Exeter to London: Getting into the capital

The first stage of your journey is the train from Exeter to central London. You have a couple of options for train stations in Exeter. If you choose Exeter Central, there are direct trains into London Waterloo on South Western Railway with a journey time of around 3 hours 20 minutes.


Whereas, if you start your journey from Exeter St. David’s, you can take a direct train to London Paddington on Great Western Railway with a journey time of around 2 hours 10 minutes. If you’re travelling from Exeter Central and want to arrive into Paddington, you can change at Exeter St. David’s.

How to get from Waterloo to Paddington (if you need to)

If you take the GWR train into Paddington from Exeter St. David’s, you’ll be in the right place for the Heathrow Express. But if you arrive into London Waterloo, you’ll need to get across London to Paddington.


The quickest way to do so is to take the Bakerloo Line northbound for nine stops to Paddington – it should take around 14 minutes. Or you can take the Jubilee Line and change at Baker Street.

Find your seat and put your feet up on the Heathrow Express

Our Heathrow Express trains usually run from platform six or seven at Paddington station. If you arrive into Paddington on the GWR train from Exeter St. David’s, simply stroll from your train to the Heathrow Express platform.


If you take the tube from Waterloo, make your way up to the main station concourse and head through the ticket barriers with your Heathrow Express ticket in hand.


Remember to check the boards at the station in case we’re running from a different platform on the day.

All aboard the Heathrow Express


It takes just 15 minutes to travel from Paddington to Heathrow Airport on the Heathrow Express.


We also leave Paddington every 15 minutes, with four trains running every hour from as early as 5:10am to as late as 11.25pm. Once you board your train, relax in your seat and make use of the ample legroom. There’s plenty of space for your luggage, whether you have a carry-on bag or bigger suitcases.


You’ll find free Wi-Fi throughout our trains whether you want to check in for your flight or simply stay connected on your journey to the airport. Passengers travelling with us on Business First Class get even more space, as well as a table and plug socket – plus free Fast Track Security at the airport.


Kids aged 15 and under also travel for free on Heathrow Express.

Arriving at Heathrow Airport


Heathrow Express trains arrive at Heathrow Central station in just 15 minutes after leaving Paddington. Hop off the train here if you’re flying from Terminal 2, 3 or 4. It’s a short walk to either Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 using the inter-terminal walkway. For flights from Terminal 4, there’s a shuttle bus from Heathrow Central.


The Heathrow Express then continues for another six minutes to Terminal 5 station, for all flights from Terminal 5.
